AWA has a long history of indoor stair climbing to celebrate Earth Day. Now: the stair climbing moves outdoors!
This Adventure involves climbing and descending 18 different outdoor staircases. That is a total of 1,166 stairs (in each direction).
Almost all of the staircases are in the Renfrew/Bridgeland and Crescent Heights area on the edge of Downtown Calgary. We will be cycling between the staircase locations on a pleasant route involving quiet streets and pathways. You will probably see parts of Calgary you have never visited before!
This event will take approximately 2 hours. It is suitable for participants of 12 years old and over. This is a great event to do as a fitness challenge for a family, individual or team.
Participants are expected to fundraise the following amount with
sponsorships from friends and family. You may also sponsor yourself.
All donations to AWA are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
Minimum donation per participant: $50 (for individual or family)
Why Join This Adventure?
If you have enjoyed AWA’s previous stair climbing event, Climb for Wilderness (1991-2019) in the past, this Adventure may be for you! This event is intended to be in the same spirit as the Climb for Wilderness. You can make it as challenging as you want. Climbing and descending each staircase, along with the cycling, is a reasonable physical challenge probably equivalent to climbing the stairs at the Bow twice. If you want to make it more challenging consider climbing and descending the staircases two or three times to increase your stair count. Perhaps your friends and family will match your personal challenge with sponsorship!
The sponsorship amount for this event is set at $50. If you want to join as a family that is the minimum amount required for a family to join us. You will need to register and sign a waiver form for each each one of you.
As an adult joining us without your children we hope you will find sponsors to support you for at least the minimum of $50.
We are looking forward to this Adventure built on the amazing times we enjoyed with so many of you for more than 25 years as the Climb for Wilderness on Earth Day.

Things To be Aware Of
Stair climbing will be at your own pace and you can climb each staircase multiple times if you wish.
Cycling will be as a group and at a pace that is suitable for the whole group.
Bikes parked at each staircase will be watched by a volunteer. There should be no need for a bike lock.
There are 2 major road crossings on the route, both have traffic lights.
At the 500-stair mark there will be an opportunity to break off from the event and return to the start/finish point for those who wish to make the event shorter.
This event is expected to proceed in most weather.
The event will last around 2 hours so bring water and food as required.
There is only one public bathroom on the route, about 40% the way through. There is no bathroom at the start/finish point.
