Too often we move through wild places without much thought, observation, or reflection on what is around us. This adventure provides an opportunity to sit with the grandeur of nature, experience your surroundings in a new way, and connect to wilderness through art. Drawing places us in nature, rather than going through nature. It engages a different set of experiences and brings forward a spiritual awareness and a sense of shared connection.

• Our entire adventure will take place at the Pinetop Provincial Recreation Area, just off Sibbald Creek Road when it turns to gravel on the eastern/Calgary side. There are a few picnic tables, a parking area, and pit/vault toilets.
• Barbara Amos, an interdisciplinary artist who has addressed social and environmental issues through her creations, will guide us in mindful drawing exercises. Participants may walk 1km or less between parking, adventure activities, and washroom use. Options to wander on trails may allow some participants to get more movement – but significantly less than a typical walk or hike.

Please bring:

• lunch or snack, including water or a non-alcoholic beverage
• basic art supplies (a small sketch book or paper; a pencil and a fine black felt tip pen; a clipboard, hardcover book, or harder surface you can draw on)
• a light, portable chair or cushion/ small ground sheet
• Layers of clothing appropriate for the weather (we’ll be outdoors with some gentle movement and some periods of stillness– you may be most comfortable bringing a toque and mittens if it’s a chilly day)

Optional:

• Optional art supplies: light weight, simple colours (pencil crayons, watercolours, or felt tips)
• Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray (again, depending on the weather conditions)
• Hand sanitizer (for pandemic and pit toilet needs), mask

Our adventure location is within the area that now requires a Kananaskis Conservation Pass. Any vehicles participants will park at the adventure location will require pass coverage, which can be purchased online or in-person and either for one day or the year.
