Author and conservationist Sarah Elmeligi has spent years studying how bears use the landscape in Alberta’s National Parks. Join this adventure for the chance to hike with a bear expert in bear habitat. In this adventure for all ages, learn about how to look for and recognize bear sign on the trail, how to plan for a hike in bear habitat, and how to peacefully coexist with bears and safely recreate on the landscapes they call home.
All donations to AWA are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
Why Join This Adventure?
Learn about what makes good bear habitat, what we can do to protect it and how we can recreate responsibly so bears can continue to thrive in Alberta’s wild places. The author of What Bears Teach Us, Sarah focused her graduate work understanding how grizzly bears use habitat around recreationists and what can be done to ensure that people and bears share the landscape without conflict. She has also worked for a variety of non-profit organizations, government agencies, and First Nations defining land use and facility plans that strike a balance between the needs of bears and the needs of people.

Details
The group will meet at the Cave and Basin parking lot in the morning and stroll along the Marsh Loop trail, taking time to look for bear sign, good habitat and any other interesting things that catch our eye. Sarah will also discuss the challenges of managing people and wildlife throughout the Bow Valley corridor. The walk will be followed by a picnic lunch (bring your own, lunch will not be provided) where Sarah will answer all you bear-related questions. Bring your toughest bear questions and try to stump an expert!
This adventure is on a wide, flat trail so is suitable for families and most ability levels.
